Descriptio
English: Miniature oval portrait of Arctic explorer Gulielmus Barentsius extracted from of a large engraving depicting several people and places related to the prosperity of the United Provinces of the Netherlands in early 17th century.
Dating between the years 1613 and 1615, it is the earliest known portrait of Barents, who died in 1597. While being posthumous, it is believed to bear a fairly accurate resemblance to the explorer, judging by the resemblance of the other portraits in the same engraving.
This 30 mm high miniature portrait was used as the model for a very enlarged one engraved and published in late 19th century.
