Artemisia Gentilescia[1] (Romae nata die 8 Iulii 1593; mortua Neapoli anno 1654) fuit pictrix Itala.

Filia fuit Horatii Gentilescii pictoris Pisani (nonnumquam cognomen avi paterni Lomi, quod pater abiuraverat, ipsa resumpserit). Artem pictoriam in officina patris discebat, ubi iam anno 1610 tabulam "Susanna et senes" appellatam pinxit, primum ex operibus eius hodie cognitis. Anno insequenti ab Augustino Tassi patris collaboratore stuprata est, qui, matrimonium promissum abnegans, lege damnatus est sed nullam subiit poenam.[2] Illa die 11 Augusti 1612 Petro Antonio Stiattesi nupsit,[3] cui filiam Prudentiam vel Palmiram, pictricem futuram, peperit.

Romae ergo a principio, Florentiae ab 1614 cum marito habitabat. Ibi prima mulierum in academiam Artis Designi Florentinam recepta est. Marito relicto Romae anno 1621 redita est, ubi Cassianum a Puteo cognovit, sed his annis interdum Venetiis operam dedit.[4] Neapoli ab 1630 usque ad mortem habitabat, sed cum patre Londinii in aula Caroli I ab 1638 duos fere annos laboravit. Tabularum eius maxima parte mulieres aut protagonistas aut viris aequas depinguntur.[5]
