Disputatio:Epistylium

I don't have the Loeb Vitruvius, but based on your quotation the editor seems to have made a mistake. The reference to the Bacchae is correct, but the word in the text there is ἔμβολον, confirmed by Dodds's commentary on the Bacchae and by Liddell & Scott (ἔμβολος, ἔμβολον 6. ... "architrave".). Both of the English words you mention are traced etymologically back to Italian, not to Latin. Italian intavolatura does have a Latin equivalent, intabulatura (see Google), but that seems to be used as a musical term, not an architectural one. So, yes, I agree with UV.
