Mas ~ masculinus

[fontem recensere]

Not an absolute distinction, but perhaps one worth maintaining:

mas, maris = Anglice: male (sexus plantarum et animalium)
masculinus, -a, -um = Anglice: masculine (generis grammatici)

At least two dictionaries show that mas, maris tends to refer to the sex of plants & animals, whereas masculinus, though it can be applied to sex, is especially a technical term in grammar, applied in reference to gender. Ergo estne nobis haec distinctio: "sexus est mas; genus est masculinum"? IacobusAmor 12:27, 24 Augusti 2007 (UTC)[reply]
