Caprimulgidae (a caprimulgo) sunt nocturnae vel crepusculares magnitudinis mediae aves ordinis Caprimulgiformium, quarum proprietates notabiles sunt alae longae, crura brevia, rostra brevissima. Contra apertam nominis significationem, earum victus maximi momenti in insectis consistit.
Caprimulgidae in omne orbe terrarum praeter Novam Zelandiam et aliquot insulas Oceanicas inveniuntur. Impigrae sunt vesperi primaque luce, vel etiam nocte. Saepissime in solo nidificant. Plerumque lepidopteris aliisque magnis insectis volantibus vescuntur.
Plurimis sunt pedes parvi, ambulando haud bene adhibiti, atque alae longae et acutae. Earum plumae cryptice colorantur, ut corticis vel foliorum similes videantur. Nonnullae species secundum, non trans, ramos consident, ut sese diu melius celent.
Phalaenoptilus nuttallii unica avis est, quia hibernat, iners, temperatura corporis hebdomades atque adeo menses multo imminuta; aliae caprimulgidae quoque torpidae breviora tempora fieri possunt.[1]
Caprimulgidae unum aut duo ova maculata recte in solum nudum pariunt. Subiciuntur caprimulgidae, periculo imminente, ova pullosque a nido in ore movere. Quod identidem in libris ornithologicis dicitur, sed investigationes academicae indicia talis consuetudinis quae refutari non possunt haud inveniunt.[2][3]
